We Must be Water

“When I had not yet formed you in the womb, I knew you.”

Jeremiah 1:5

We all have shoes to fill. The world forms around our feet the way a river rushes over as you cross. The man without a shirt stitches the heart like a cloak. The woman without a roof builds the foundation of our minds.

There are those who balk at the idea that they were formed at all. “I want no iron chains… I spin my own web…”. These hunger artists turn their own skin into parchment just to prove they are the author.

It is easy to write them off, but there’s a lie from which they are trying to arise. The lie is spoken through lips cracked under the weight of the effort to speak the world’s total meaning. Such lips are attached to firm fingers which wag like an unmoving dog’s tail. Their chastisement is rooted in the truth that we can be better, but though it may be that Man was formed from earth, we are nonetheless made of water. Ultimately, truth pours down like water and is unsatisfied to be still like earth, however much virtue there might be in its humility. Those who formed us by their need will die of thirst long before they die of hunger, and so we must be fluid.
